Islamic World In Turmoil

As regimes topple in North Africa and shakings threaten Middle East leaders, could this be the breaking down of a wall of Islam many have predicted for years? Or will it have the opposite effect? Will it strengthen extremism and create an open door for radical Islamist groups to take power?

In the space of just weeks the impossible happened in the Muslim world. Starting in Tunisia December 17, 2010, Mohammed Bouazizi's suicide started revolts against repressive regimes in the region. The Tunisian government was quickly overthrown and people in Algeria, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Jordan, and several other countries began demonstrations.

For those of us who have been praying and working into this area of the world for years, we are amazed and rejoicing at all God is doing. Nevertheless, it is too soon to abandon prayer for the region and assume the job is done. We need to listen to God’s prophetic voice and continue to pray and intercede in accordance for the people.

During the last nine years I have had the responsibility of putting together the international version of the “30-Days” prayer materials. I want to thank you for praying. Many of you have participated for several years. Much progress has been made in making the Messiah known to Muslims around the world. “30-Days” has played a role in the effort. God is doing marvellous things.

Friendships are needed to make the Gospel known. I want to encourage you to become a friend of Muslims in your heart. Tomorrow will be Friday. Will you join me in praying for Muslims on Fridays during the coming weeks, perhaps for the coming year? In this way you may continue to be involved in saving their lives for all eternity. On our web site you can find some tools to help you to pray on Fridays.

* Today I would like to ask you to pray for the coordinators of “30-Days” around the world. You can see a complete list of our offices on our site (www.30-days.net). Many of the coordinators and other volunteers have served in producing and distributing this prayer literature for many years. Some do this with significant personal risk, several are my personal friends. They face numerous spiritual and practical challenges. You might also think of participating financially in this prayer effort by giving financially. We are planning to do“30-Days” again in August 2011. It will be our 20th Ramadan prayer effort. We hope you will join us at that time.

Britain's Muslim / Christian Dialogue

For Wednesday 8 September, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Today there are roughly 2.4 million Muslims living in Britain. They come from all over the world and include second and third generation immigrants as well as converts from the British population.

Events of recent years have made it difficult for many Christians to build relationships with Muslims in their neighbourhoods. Cultural misunderstandings and the isolation of Muslim communities have made it challenging for many British Christians to know where to begin in making friends with Muslims.

Education is key on both sides, for addressing fear and creating a platform where relationships can develop in shared schoolyards, workplaces and neighbourhoods

Prayer Starters:

* Pray against the fear which many British people have about Muslim culture.
* Pray for genuine friendships to develop across the cultural barriers and for real love to characterise the relationships between Muslim and Christian.
* Pray that the church would be a hospitable place for new Muslim immigrants and other alienated Muslims, and that programs to assist them would demonstrate the love of Christ.
* Pray that ongoing dialogue between Christian and Muslim leaders in this nation would be fruitful.

For Tuesday 7 September, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Good News: East Malaysia is seeing a mighty outpouring of the Spirit of God! Believers say they are having a revival. And several Christian groups say they are having a marvelous impact on society and the majority Muslim population. In fact, East Malaysia has one of the most vibrant and growing communities of believers in Southeast Asia!

Although this miracle is happening in Eastern Malaysia, it is hoped that this will spill over and have a significant impact on the larger Malay population on the Malaysian Peninsula. According to a census, large numbers of indigenous tribal peoples are embracing faith in Christ.

Prayer Starters:

* Bless what God is doing, pray for more of an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in East Malaysia.
* May God inspire believers to become more intentional in reaching out to their Muslim neighbours and fellow workers.
* Pray that God would raise up people with various spiritual gifts to help the believers and help Muslims to discover the Good News.
* Pray for the establishing of culturally-relevant, indigenous communities of faith in each Muslim community.
* There are challenges for congregations which seek to welcome Muslims who discover the Messiah. Pray for them as they seek to help new believers

Muslims in South Korea

For Monday 6 September, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

The UN sent troops to Korea to fight against the North Korean communists during the 1950 Korean War. As part of the war effort the nation of Turkey sent a battalion of soldiers to Korea. This was the beginning of modern contact between Koreans and Muslims. Two Turkish imams came and began propagating Islam to war weary Koreans.

It is said that there are now more than 35,000 ethnic-Korean Muslims since the first two Korean converts in 1955. In By 2007 there were about 110,000 expatriate Muslims in South Korea. Today there are more than 10 mosques and 40 prayer centres throughout the country.

Prayer Starters:

* Because of the negative impact of various incidents involving Koreans in Afghanistan and elsewhere, animosity and fear toward Muslims and Islam have crept into the hearts of some Korean believers. Pray for Christians to overcome their fears, to find ways to share the gospel with Muslims and to build lasting relationships with other local believers. Ask for Korean believers to overcome fear and have a renewal of vision and desire to reach out to Muslims (1 John 4:18 and 2 Tim 1:7).
* Pray for a greater awareness and understanding of Islamic religion and culture in Korean society in general. This will facilitate greater social integration of Muslims in society so they can meet Christians.

Kidnapped Brides in Kyrgyzstan

For Sunday 5 September, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Kyrgyzstan has a significant social problem in the area of marriage. About 40% of the brides in Kyrgyzstan are simply kidnapped and married by force. This is a tribal custom from many generations ago. Young women are abducted just about anywhere or anytime.

In most cases the young girls do not consent to the kidnapping. Some give their consent to avoid difficulties, others genuinely decide to simply accept their “destiny”, their families are invited and a marriage takes place. Many girls stay with their new husband but others seek to escape, a minority of young women commit suicide. The psychological trauma is significant.

Prayer Starters:

* Many Kyrgyz Muslims are involved in seeking to change this situation by various means. Ask God to bring the Kyrgyz people to a real heart change in this area.
* Ask the Lord to bring further revelation to the Kyrgyz people about the true nature and meaning of marriage. (Ephesians 5:21-33)
* Ask that God will reveal Himself as a trustworthy Father to these young girls.
* Pray for healing for those who have suffered trauma and physical abuse.
* Pray that both young men and women will find Jesus Christ as Saviour and surrender their lives to Him.

Pray for Rajshahi, Bangladesh

For Saturday 4 September, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

In the early 1980’s, a brave young Muslim-background businessman moved to Rajshahi, a medical hub for Bangladesh, on the Ganges River, just a few kilometers from India. The young man began witnessing to Muslims, encouraging believers to remain within their families and culture. As a result, three house fellowships were started. These fellowships are growing, vibrant and bold in outreach, but much depth in discipleship and knowledge of God’s Word is needed to sustain the movement.

In the past, the ministry has been forced to focus on the men, with the women and children being much less accessible. That is beginning to change. However, women are still less literate and more limited in travel opportunities and free time.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for the house fellowships to grow in maturity, obedience and knowledge of God’s Word. Pray for godly elders to be appointed who are committed to holy living and service. (1 Tim 3:1-13)
* Pray that believing husbands would teach their wives, maintain family devotions and take responsibility for their children’s faith. Pray that more women would find opportunities to grow in maturity.
* Some people in the city have begun to sell Bibles in the Muslim dialect of Bengali. Pray that seekers would buy, read and understand God’s Word.
* In the larger Rajshahi district, there are many seekers and young believers who meet together sporadically. Pray that believers would see the need for regular weekly worship.
* Pray for a significant witness on Rajshahi campuses among the thousands of stu-dents. There has been some fruit recently.

Praying People - Friday Prayer Focus

For Friday 3 September, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

In Islam normal daily prayer is a focused ritual exercise which is an expression of worship and honour toward Allah. Muslims do not expect to deeply know God or hear His voice. Personal requests are possible in Islam, but the formal ritual prayers are definitely the most important prayer activity for Muslims.

Toward noon today thousands of Kho in Pakistan will be praying in their local mosques. Many will think that their prayer should earn them merit before God. This people group numbers about 320,000 people. There are no known believers. No one is seeking specifically to reach them at the present time. The Kho appear to be very resistant to the Gospel. Most of them live in the upper valleys, where farming is very difficult due to the dry, rugged mountain terrain. The heart language of the Kho is Khowar.

Prayer Starters:

* Ask the Lord specifically for breakthroughs among the Kho people, and that they will ponder questions like 'Does God still speak today?'
* Also ask God to send labourers to this difficult harvest for long-term ministry among the tribes of northern Pakistan.
* Pray that the Kho people will receive dreams and visions of Jesus.
* Remember that Pakistan is going through a VERY difficult time just now, our prayers will make a difference.

West Africa

Pray for the Jola People of West Africa

For Thursday 2 September, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Most Jola have never heard any of the stories about Jesus and the Kingdom of God from the Bible, but many of them are willing to listen. About 560,000 Jola people live across three countries in West Africa (Senegal, the Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau). Most Jola people maintain various degrees of the traditional animistic beliefs and practices, including the fear of witchcraft, evil spirits, and curses.

The Jola have no caste-type system, all are considered to be equals. Families are large and fiercely loyal to one another. Many families are polygamous – men often have up to four wives. At present 90% of Jolas claim to be Muslim, with only about 2% Christian.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray that the light of God will shine into the Jola villages and towns. Pray that they will have dreams and visions of Jesus and will trust in Him.
* Pray that chiefs, religious leaders, and elders will follow the Messiah. Pray that local and non-native believers will be able to get the Word of God to all the Jola by various means.
* Bible Translation in Gambia: Three gospels are complete and the rest of the New Testament is being corrected. Pray that God will prepare the Jola to hear the Word in their language, understand it, and believe. Pray for the Gambian translators as they seek to express the gospel clearly in their own language.

Unreached People Groups in India

For Wednesday 1 September, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Please pray with us by name for the 25 Indian Muslim people groups comprising 100,000 people who have no known gospel witness.

One example is the Kunjra people living in the Indian state of Bihar, which is one of the most caste-conscious states among Sunni Muslims. Religiously, the Sunni caste system (different from the Hindu caste system) not only assigns social status based on birth, it also generally restricts a person to a traditional occupation or role.

The Kunjra have not rejected the gospel; they have simply never heard it.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for more information to be learned about the Kunjra and the other people on the list.
* Ask God for committed workers to live among the Kunjra and the other groups and to share the love of Christ with them.
* Ask the Lord to raise up prayer teams for these peoples.

The half-million Bahrainis are descended from a mixture of indigenous peoples and settlers from the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. Some tensions exist between the poorer Shia Islamic majority, and the politically-dominant Sunni minority, and between the Arab and Persian background inhabitants.

Hans (not his real name) is a Christian and successful business man in Bahrain. He wants to stay but would also love to live somewhere he, his wife and young son could freely worship Jesus without harassment from relatives. For now he has chosen to stay since the government presently demonstrates a good level of tolerance towards believers. It is unclear how long these freedoms will last.

Prayer Starters:

* Bahraini believers like Hans need daily courage as they follow the Lord, in the face of family and community hostility. Pray for those like him.
* Bahrainis sometimes have opportunities to hear the Gospel through foreign believers and to see their example, but these opportunities need to be multiplied by at least a thousand! Pray for the opening of minds and hearts (Luke 24:32 and Acts 16:14).
* Poorer foreign workers need support and justice; and Bahrainis need courage to address the sins and injustices of their own society.

The Favorite Wife

Mohammed's Favorite Wife

Commonly referred to as Muhammad’s favourite wife, Aisha bint Abu Bakr was formally engaged to the Prophet at the age of six. (This practice was not unknown in Arabia at the time). Aisha was Muhammad’s only virgin bride, which some have seen as a divine sign. Aisha did not bear any children.

Sunni Muslims hold her in very high esteem. She is reputed to be the source of many sacred traditions concerning Muhammad (Hadith). When Muhammad was approaching death, he spent his last moments in the company of the 18-year-old Aisha and died with his head in her lap. She remained unmarried until her death during Ramadan. She was 65. Many parents call their daughters Aisha today.

Prayer Starters:

* As we have prayed for the living Khadijahs around the world on Day 13 we can also pray for the living Aishas, who take their name from Mohammed’s favourite wife. Worldwide, they certainly number in the hundreds of thousands.
* Ask God to open doors of opportunity for the living Aishas to hear the traditions and accounts concerning the life of the Messiah and believe in Him.
* Pray for the Aishas that you may know or that you may have heard about. Ask the Lord to reveal himself to them that they might find life in the resurrected King.

The Shi'a Expectation of the End Times

For Sunday 29 August, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Shi’a (Shi’ite) Muslims are a minority within the Muslim community, making up about 10-15% of all Muslims worldwide. The Shia majority countries are Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan and Bahrain.

The Shiite believe a Hidden Imam, a sinless leader (the Mahdi) will establish an Islamic empire of peace and justice at the end of time. The Mahdi will be aided by Jesus who is also supposed to return to earth when the Mahdi appears. Both the Mahdi and Jesus will be opposed by the Masih ad-Dajjal, an evil, one eyed, anti-Christ figure, who will eventually be slain and the whole world will submit to Islam. Some time after the victory of the Mahdi there will be a general resurrection of the dead followed by the last judgement.

Prayer Starters:

* There are possibly 200,000 Shia mullahs (religious leaders) in Iran alone and many thousands more in Iraq. They have a significant role in their communities and in society as a whole. They are teaching their people to place their confidence in the future Mahdi and to practice Islam with zeal. Pray for these leaders to come to know the living Messiah, Jesus (Acts 6:7).
* The Messiah is the ultimate hope for a world of peace and justice. Indeed the Bible promises us that one day the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the water covers the sea (Isaiah 11:9 and Habbakuk 2:4). There will be a new heaven and a new earth in which righteousness dwells (2 Peter 3:13). Pray that the millions of Shi’a Iranians and Iraqis discover the living and reigning Messiah who is the true hope of the world.

Prayer for Morocco in North Africa

For Saturday 28 August, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Muhammad VI, who became king in 1999, is the highest political, military and religious authority in Morocco. In spite of his efforts to change things in the country, a large proportion of the population is very poor, and often rich and powerful people employ poorer people with promises to pay them, but which often do not materialise.

One man has long hours of work and low pay. He and many of his co-workers wait for weeks for their promised salaries. They need to borrow money to support their families or even borrow for special expenses such as the beginning of the school year, the added food needs during Ramadan and the feast of the slaughtering of a sheep during the Aid El-Kabir. They must accept the unjust treatment, because their employer can send them away whenever he likes.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray that the king may continue to lead his country in a wise and godly way. Some authorities have persecuted Moroccan believers, many have been threatened and some jailed. Many more Moroccans need to discover the forgiveness and new life which is found in the Messiah.
* Authorities and employers need to consider God’s wisdom in dealing with employees: “Pay the hired man his wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and counting on it. ...” (Deut. 24:15 and Col. 4:1). The employees need to discover God’s plan for their lives and do their jobs faithfully and well (Col. 3:22-25).

The Friday Sermon - Friday Prayer Focus

For Friday 27 August, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Each Friday, just after noon, several hundred million Muslims find their way to mosques around the world. In some places, almost the entire male population goes to the mosque and hears a sermon given by a religious leader. Typically the sermon will consist of moral and spiritual guidance for everyday life using references to the Qur’an, the traditions concerning Mohammed and examples from Islamic history.

In some countries Muslim preachers use their sermons to speak about how to not let the television and Internet dominate in the lives of children. Some references are made to international events, the Palestinians and others. Governments often give instructions to religious leaders in order to prevent using the pulpit for radical purposes.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for the leaders of mosques who are giving sermons today. May their zeal for God become rooted in real knowledge of God (Romans 10:1-4). May God reveal himself in the lives of Islamic preachers (pray for the men who give sermons in your area as well).
* Pray for the multitudes of young men traveling to a mosque right now. Pray for divine intervention so that they may taste salvation and real peace (Isaiah 9:6-7).

Muslims in Toronto

For Thursday 26 August, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Greater Toronto, probably the most multicultural city on earth, is now possibly home to more than 300,000 Muslims from many nations (statistics vary). Three of the city’s most densely populated high-rise apartment clusters, Thorncliffe Park, Crescent Town and Dixon Park, are mostly Muslim. Comprised of people from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Somalia, each square kilometre of these neighbourhoods has as many as 20,000 people stacked on each other.

In recent years, some believers have been able to proclaim to their friends the hope that they have in Christ. In many cases Muslims are invited to enter a Christian home for the first time in their lives. As Muslims start to see Jesus, some turn away, others are strongly attracted to Him!

For Muslims and Christians living alongside each other, there exists a huge potential for mutual respect, appreciation, reconciliation and love to flow.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray that through the sharing of their lives and the Word of God, that the Messiah would be honoured by believers who are seeking to proclaim the Good News among Toronto’s Muslims.
* Pray that Canada’s Muslims would find jobs, peace and a sense of belonging in their new country.
* Pray that Toronto’s Muslims who are discovering the living Messiah would become a source of life and inspiration for their fellow countrymen in Canada and in their homelands.

What's Happening in Dubai

For Wednesday 25 August, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Dubai is a small city state in the United Arab Emirates. In recent years, however, it has become a world class city of gleaming towers and walled villas. Dubai’s shopping centres even have a ski slope, an aquarium and under-water zoo along with luxurious shops. But unfortunately the city is not only made of outward beauty.

About 85% of the inhabitants of Dubai are non-Emiratis. Many live in substandard or crowded housing and work terribly long hours. Muslims, including the local Emiratis, make up about 50%+ of the 1.6 million population (In all the United Arab Emirates - population 5 million - the figures are: Muslim 65%, Hindu 17%, Christian 9% Buddhist 4% other or unknown 5%).

The city definitely has its dark side. The large amounts of money in Dubai’s financial and real estate markets attracts all kinds of legal and illegal activities (1 Tim 6:10).

* Many of the foreign workers who consider themselves Christian are actually fairly nominal in their faith. Some are true and committed believers in the Messiah.
* Pray that these believers may really provide an example to Muslims and non-Muslims about what it means to walk in God’s ways (Mt. 4:16, John 8:12).
* Pray that the knowledge of God could come to the Emiratis, other Arabs, the Pakistanis and the Bangladeshis. Emirati society is especially closed to outsiders. The actual contact between Emiratis and non-Emiratis is fairly limited. Pray for openings so that all these peoples could discover the Messiah.

Pray for the Luos Muslims in Kenya

For Tuesday 24 August, Ramadan 2010. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

The Luos are the second largest ethnic group in Kenya adding up to about 5 million people (the biggest being the Kikuju amounting to about 7.5 million). Traditionally they live in the area near Lake Victoria, but are also found scattered throughout the country, particularly in the urban centres. There are about 39 million people in total in Kenya.

Omar grew up as a Muslim but among Christians in his village. The shocking experience of seeing his brother dying as a result of an occult curse and sensing that he was himself also in serious danger was the catalyst that lead Omar to trust in the Messiah. The positive experiences with believers in his childhood and youth encouraged him to take this step. Today Omar is active in a group of believers and seeks to proclaim the Messiah to Muslims through song in Kenya.

Prayer Starters:

* Many Muslims have had positive experiences with believers in their childhood. Pray that they would remember these experiences and seriously consider the possibility of encountering the Messiah for themselves.
* Pray that believers find inspiration to live out their faith and proclaim the Good News in such a way that Muslims could be attracted to the Messiah.
* Pray for the bodies of believers in East Africa, that they would not overlook Muslims around them, but meet them in love.

Khadijah, Mohammed's First Wife

While Muhammad was married to Khadijah, he took no other wives because of his love for her. She was equally devoted to him. When he received his first revelations, she played an important role in convincing him that he was becoming a prophet. She even used her wealth to help promote Islam, to the point of being persecuted for her support of her husband.

Khadijah was the mother of Fatima (born in AD 605), who was the mother of Hussein and Hassan through Ali. The dates of Khadijah’s birth and death are not clear but it is probable that she was born in AD 555 and she probably died in AD 619. It is believed by some that her death partly motivated Mohammed to move to Medina. She was considered one of four perfect women.

Prayer Starters:

* Around the world literally hundreds of thousands, even possibly well over a million, Muslim women are named Khadijah. Many of them know very little about the wife of Mohammed or her positive example in many aspects of life.
* Pray for the living Khadijahs that they will discover the Messiah through friends, radio, literature, television and other media.
* Pray for those among your acquaintances, or who live in your area, that they may discover and apply the traits of a virtuous wife described in Proverbs 31 and come to know the purity which is from the Messiah.

In Arab culture, conspiracy lies at the heart of everyday life. At home women conspire with amulets and potions to manipulate their men. Men threaten to take a second wife in order to get their way. One sibling conspires against his / her siblings for parental attention. Officials conspire with a manipulated news media. For many Arabs this is part of daily reality.

Being aware of the scheming in their own circles, sometimes they will react by blaming others for their difficulties. Like all people's around the world, Arab Muslims need the one who delivers from the ultimate schemer ( John 14:6 and 10:10-11).

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for profound healing where people have experienced injustice and exploitation (Isaiah 61:1-3).
* Pray that the increasingly more numerous communities of believers in the Arab world would become havens of rest, healing, love, truth and honesty in the scheming world of manipulation and darkness.
* Pray that there would be significant casting down of the numerous exaggerated lies and half truths which have become reality for many Arab Muslims (John. 8:31-32, 2 Cor 10:4-5).

Al Basrah, (also called Basorah) is the capital of Basra Province in Iraq with an estimated population of about 3.8 million. Basrah is a significant port. It is estimated that at least 90% of the city is built on oil fields. The gas and petrol fumes are part of the daily life of Basrah’s residents. About 20% of the population are Sunni Muslim but the vast majority are Shiites. A very small number are believers.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray that God would raise up officials and community leaders who seek the well being of their people more than their own prosperity and self indulgence.
* Pray especially for leaders to have inspiration, wisdom and courage to take the urgent steps necessary to solve the many health, garbage collection and sewage problems. The people of the city are suffering greatly.
* Pray for breakthroughs in the area of education and jobs. Some schools are very overcrowded and lack basic facilities like toilets.
* Many people live in fatalism and can see no future. Pray that many of Basrah’s Muslims would encounter the Messiah, the giver of hope, through television, radio and personal witness.

Preparations for Prayer - Friday Prayer Focus

Today again, Muslims worldwide will be preparing themselves for Friday prayer. Indeed, all week long, practising Muslims do these ritual washings in order to be pure for prayer. Ritual cleansing is very important to Muslims, as well as the specific times. This differs significantly from Christian teaching about prayer. In Islam it is impossible to pray correctly without the ritual cleansing with water, or in the absence of water, with sand.

Islamic instruction about prayer is filled with long passages on exactly how to go about the cleansing process. None of the steps can be sidestepped or done in an improper way otherwise Islamic prayer loses its merit and validity. Unfortunately, no one can be saved or sanctified by ritual cleansing.

Prayer Starters:

* While some aspects of the ritual washing may be helpful as a reminder about how sinful we are as human beings, ultimately the ritual cleansing does not lead Muslims to true righteousness or holiness.
* Pray for Muslims to discover the depths of sin and God’s holiness so that they may forever be freed of the idea that water can ever make them fit to meet God. Pray this for people that you may know, pray for Muslims in your city and elsewhere (Heb 8:9-12).
* Pray for the Muslims who will be praying at the Jama Masjid in Delhi, India (above). There are possibly 1.5 million Muslims in The Delhi/New Delhi urban area (11%). Followers of the Messiah are less than one percent. Pray for believers to seize opportunities to proclaim the Gospel.

In Norway some estimate the Muslim population at around 150,000 people out of a total population of 4.8 million. The first mosque was built in 1974. More than 80,000 Muslims are registered members of almost 100 Muslim congregations. Today, Norway appears, as the rest of Europe, as a multi-cultural society.

The vast majority of Norwegians are members of the Lutheran Church (over 80%) but relatively few are active members and many have beliefs which actually do not reflect Biblical faith. According to one poll, 32% of Norwegians indicated that they “believe there is a god / God”, whereas 47% answered that they “believe there is some sort of spirit or life force” and 17% that they “do not believe there is any sort of spirit, god, or life force”. Some churches have been ministering to Muslim communities for many years.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for all the Christian individuals and churches reaching out to Muslims. For boldness and revelation of His will.
* Pray for all Muslim immigrants, that they will meet believers wherever they settle, and that these neighbours will show them Jesus. That Jesus will be their comfort and help in times of need.
* Pray that Jesus will be revealed in Norwegian society, in media and through the churches and believers.

Christians in Sudan have asked us for prayer. Both north and south Sudan are preparing for war. The situation is complex, the problems many. Please ask prayer networks you know to be involved in prayer for Sudan.

Background:

* South Sudan is to vote on whether it will choose independence or be part of a united Sudan on January 9th, 2011.
* South Sudan has much oil, but it is exported from North Sudan's ports. North Sudan is under Sharia law, South Sudan is "Christian" and animist.
* There is little unity in Sudan. But the real eye-opener is to read the forums where open hatred is spewed between North and South Sudanese. (I have listed examples on the web page.)

Prayer Starters Specific to War in Sudan:

* Pray that the Christian leaders of South Sudan can hear clearly the Lord's will regarding Sudan's future.
* Pray that grass-roots reconciliation can become widespread between the tribes of Sudan and the many hurt people within this vast country.

Muslims living in the state of Rajasthan, in Western India, consist of about 60 different peoples. Out of the estimated 61 million Rajasthani population Hindus account for 88.8%, Muslims make up 8.5%, Sikhs 1.4% and Jains 1.2%. The Muslims mainly speak Hindustani which is a mixture of Hindi and Urdu. However, most read from the Hindi script. A full Bible in Hindustani is still needed.

Christians have been reaching Muslims using a simple ‘kurbaan story’ which describes the major sacrifices in both the Old and New Testaments. Some, who have come to know by word of mouth, the story of God and man based on the Bible, are capable of telling it in a logical way. This is very helpful to illiterate believers and those seeking God.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for the Rajasthani Muslims who have discovered the Messiah in His fullness to be obedient to the only true and living God. Please pray for a deepening faith as they enter more and more into a daily experience of dying and rising with Christ. To do this, a complete Bible translation in Hindustani is very desirable.

* Continue to pray that as they witness boldly to others, Jesus is exalted above all. There is opposition (Acts 4:27-31).

* Pray for the Rajasthani Muslims from each of the major peoples (the Pathan, Shaikh and Sayyid ethnic groups): That they will call on Jesus for salvation (Acts 4:12)..

In Nigeria many of the 15+ million Nigerian Fulani stay in small settlements and cities in Nigeria’s predominantly Muslim northern region. There are numerous sub-tribes and clans of the Fulani but in Nigeria they generally fall into five large groups: The Adamawa (1.1 million) the Haabe (2.6 million), the Sokoto (2.7 million), the Toroobe (7.5 million) and the Mbororo (2.3 million). Fulani households consist of a male leader, one or more wives, 6-12 or more children, and other family members.

The vast majority of the Fulani in Nigeria are no longer nomadic. But they trace their origins to the nomadic, pastoral lifestyle. Fulani households consist of a male leader, one or more wives, six to 12 or more children and other family members.

While the Jesus film and gospel portions have been put into the Fulani language (Fulfulde), there are still very few Christians who are reaching out to this people. Even so, God has done marvelous things in bringing some Fulani to himself.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for laborers. There simply are not enough Messianic believers proclaiming the Good News to the Fulani.

* Ask the Lord to touch Fulani leaders and imams that they may become obedient to the Lord Jesus (Acts 6:7).

* Pray for increased understanding among the followers of Jesus and Muslims in Nigeria. Peacemaking and repairing the decades of strife and civil unrest between Muslims and those who follow Jesus is a major necessity.

Saudi Arabia has the largest share of oil of any nation as well as the very best technology in the oil industry. The Saudi Aramco Corporation is the world’s richest company. A few years ago Saudi Aramco topped the Non-Public company list with an estimated value of $781 billion USD.

The Saudis have developed a huge infrastructure to facilitate the drilling, processing and exportation of petroleum. Historically significant numbers of foreign workers and engineers were involved in the oil industry, but now about 85 percent of the official Saudi Aramco work force of 54,000 is Saudi.

Saudis are largely Sunni Muslims; from their perspective they are all Muslims by birth. Proselytising is not punishable by death, but by imprisonment and deportation (for some the loss of a job is as bad as death). Conversion is forbidden by the Qur’an and the penalty is death.

Prayer Starters:

* The Scriptures say that the whole earth will one day be “filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” (Hab. 2:14).

* Pray for the thousands of Saudis involved in the oil industry, that they could come “to know the glory of God in the face of Jesus the Messiah” (2 Cor.4:6).

* Many of them live in the following cities, towns, ports and drilling settlements: Dhahran, Ras Tanura, Jubail, Dammam, Al-Khobar, Hofuf, Abqaiq, Udhailiyah and Shaybah. (Please know that you are among only a small group worldwide who has ever prayed for these cities by name.)

In Jesus’ day the "news about him spread all over Syria" (Matt.4:24) and large crowds came to Him and followed Him. Some of the oldest churches in Christianity are found in Syria and are evidence of the extent of Jesus’ impact in the region. Today more than 90% of the Syrian people are Muslim and do not know Jesus. What happened?

Praise God for Syria's Christian minority! They face historical and cultural barriers and possible imprisonment for evangelistic efforts. And, a predominately Muslim people group, the Kurds, is responding to the gospel. Several believe in Christ and are even meeting in their own Kurdish fellowships.

Prayer Starters:

* Please pray that the Good News of Jesus would again be heard all over Syria.

* Pray that Syrians may come to faith and start meeting and encouraging one another.

* Praise the Lord for the Christian Kurds and others turning to Jesus.

* Pray for the government, that the Party and Islamic authorities would reign so that believers may live peasceful and quiet lives (1 Tim. 2:1-3)

03 The Call of the Muezzin - Friday Prayer Focus

Each day across the entire Islamic world, the 'muezzin' call the men to prayer five times per day over a loudspeaker located on a minaret (tower) attached to the mosque: at dawn (fajr), noon (dhuhr), in the afternoon (asr), at sunset (maghrib) and nightfall (isha’a). On Fridays (like today) all male Muslims are supposed to attend the noontime prayers which are usually accompanied by a sermon.

Sometimes recordings are used but most people prefer a live voice. In Western and non-Islamic countries muezzin often cannot make the call to prayer except on the radio or in the courtyards of local mosques because of laws restricting loud and intrusive sounds. Their own honour and prestige are temptations, as with any public figures like pastors and politicians.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for the muezzin in your own country and around the world today to have a personal encounter with the living God, through Jesus Christ.

* Pray that in the midst of many 'voices' and messages, Muslims will hear the voice of God through the working of the Holy Spirit.

* Sometimes muezzin become very centred on their role in society. As with any public figures like pastors and politicians some muezzin are tempted to place their own honour and prestige very high on their list of priorities. Pray that all muezzin would be brought to humility before God and truly confounded by His majesty in order that they may truly say "God is great."

Dialogue between Muslims and Christians provides us with opportunities to understand Muslims, build relationships, engage in peacemaking and share our faith. Ask that Christians will seek to share the gospel respectfully and boldly, without compromise – as Paul “reasoned with” people (Acts 17:2, 17). We have been entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor.5:18-19).

* Prayer: Pray for Christians ministering to Muslims, for breakthroughs in making disciples of these precious people.

* Pray that we Chrisitans will receive grace to demonstrate sacrificial love and to work toward peace.

* Ask for special opportunities to share Jesus' love with Muslims during the next 30 days.

This is an Affirmation from a Global Network of Christians who love Muslims and many who live and serve among them. We affirm nine biblical guidelines that can enable Jesus' followers to serve as his representatives in relationship with Muslims of every persuasion.

Be Faithful to God's Truth: Pray for Christians, when they relate to Muslims to do it on the basis of the core convictions of Christian faith, not by hiding or diminishing them. (Mt. 22:37, 39; 28:20, Micah 6:8)
Christ-Centered in Interaction: Ask that they will unashamedly present Jesus, the Essence of the gospel (1 Cor.2:2) and that they do not confuse the good news with Christianity, patriotism, culture or our civilisation.
Our Words and Witness: Pray that their words and witness will be in line with Scripture, containing no overstatement, exaggeration or words taken out of context (Matt.12:36, Ex.20:16, Matt.7:12, Matt.22:39).
Wisdom in our Words and Witness: Above all, ask that Christians will share their faith wisely, but not hesitate in making the best of every opportunity (Col.4:5, James 3:17-18).

Dear 30-Days friends,

welcome to the 19th annual 30 Days Muslim Prayer Focus.

This year we have a special focus on Christlike relationships with Muslims. Jesus calls his followers to experience and live out the love of God. This love is made accessible to all people through Christ, who came into the world "full of grace and truth." However, because of cultural differences, threats of terrorism and negative stereotypes of Muslims, many of God's people shrink back from fulfilling Jesus' command to love all people. We will pray about this on days 1 and 2.

The email edition is an extract of the main booklet and a link is provided each day to the main article. The idea is to give you a gist of the prayer material so you can be praying in unity with the rest of the world. The email is sent one day early to try to include most time zones.

Please use the Bible as much as possible in prayer. We have included various Bible references you can meditate on and proclaim. Ask God to inspire your prayers. That will build your faith and God can give you new insights for prayer based on His Word.

Be encouraged, we hear from all over the Muslim world of many coming to Jesus. This is the time to pray Muslims into the Kingdom of God in faith. Perhaps you can organize some extra meetings to pray in groups. The "Night of Power" (day 27) is a good time. Day 8, as a special focus on Sudan would also be good (August 18). Praying together will help generate more faith and creative prayer.

Whatever the case, I want you to know how much I appreciate you and your participation. It is a privilege to pray with you and humbling to know God is using our prayer to bring light into darkness, send workers to the Muslim world and raise funds for urgent needs of the poor.

The Afar Nomads in the Horn of Africa

For centuries the Afar have had little chance to hear the Gospel. Recital of Qur’anic verses and fear of the spirits of the desert goes back generations for the Afar. But decades ago God already sent people from the Horn of Africa. Together with the few Afar believers, a radio work of high quality has been developed. The Gospel is now heard! During the last three years many in the Ethiopian church have begun praying fervently for the Afar. Some Afar have come to faith and are being trained and baptized. They often experience harsh persecution, but they are ready to suffer. In 2008 believing Afar sisters compiled an expanded radio series for women. Thanks to the devotion and love from these sisters nomadic women have the possibility of new life in Christ.

The Afar: 1.5 million trekking Africa's Danakil Desert from south Eritrea, north Djibouti and parts of east Ethiopia. Most are illiterate.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for the radio production team and their many listeners of this area.
* Pray that men and women will hear the new radio programme and open their hearts to the message of freedom.
* Pray that whole families will come to faith in the Messiah and establish new communities of believers.

“As a young Palestinian refugee I fled to Nazareth with my family during a time of war. Later we found that our home in Haifa was occupied by Jews during my family’s absence. As a child I found it difficult to understand how God could love some people and put others in the street. As the years passed I became an enemy of the Jewish people. Later after having acknowledged Jesus as my Messiah, I met an old Jewish man who asked for forgiveness for the things he had done personally. His step of seeking forgiveness touched me and since that time my love for the Jewish people has not ceased to grow.”

He continued: “I have also visited Iraq. When I was there God filled my heart with love for the Iraqi Muslims. My heart was really grieved when I saw how the Iraqis and the Iranians had killed each other during the war from 1980-1988.” He has found it possible to love Muslims and Jews.

Amr Khaled’s influence for moderate and practical Islam has been compared to the North American evangelical preacher Rick Warren.

Moez Masoud has often spoken out for sincerity and really trying to understand people from other faiths. He has written: “I’m pretty much dedicating my life to a deeper and more profound understanding between human beings, the children of Adam. I actually named my son Adam just so that I could never be distracted from the goal.”

* Pray that God will continue to use everything which is good and positive from these men to change Middle Eastern society for the better. May they and their listeners discover the Lord in a profound way, He is the giver life (John 10:10).

Many Muslims are more open to supernatural events at this moment during Ramadan. Many Muslims believe that many of their prayer requests are granted at this time. Some believe in angelic activity, others in miracles and visions. Knowing this, it is a good moment for Christians to pray believing that God will act in the lives of seeking Muslims. Only God knows how important this could be for the salvation of many.

Prayer Starters:

* Lord, may Your compassion flow in our hearts for Muslims during this night. Lord, You are a father to the fatherless. You are near to those who are lowly and contrite in heart (Isaiah 51:17, 57:17 and 66:2).

Seeking answers, Khalid asked people who were well informed about the Qur’an to get more understanding. But as a good Muslim, his heart did not find any rest. One night he had a dream in which he saw the words “I am the God that you are looking for, I am the truth”. The following night he had the same dream. The next day Khalid’s heart was very troubled so he went to see his friend and told him about the dreams. Then his friend explained that it was probably the God of the Bible who had revealed himself to him and he invited him to pray to that God.

Khalid was then secretly welcomed into an assembly of believers. This is not always the case. New believers from a Muslim background often have difficulties being accepted by local assemblies. Some groups of believers fear that they will suffer persecution if they help a Muslim background believer.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for the secret believers who ask for help from local churches and do not find it, that they will continue to hope in Christ.
* Pray for the leaders of believing communities in Muslim countries. They are subject to varied and serious pressures.
* Pray for local assemblies - that they would be willing to take the risk of helping new believers and that their communities could become real sources of refuge for those who are discovering new life in Christ.

Malegaon is a city of about a million people located in the hot, north eastern part of Maharashtra, India (220 kilometres northeast of Mumbai). Known for its textile industry, the city is divided both physically and socially by a river. In the Muslim district, several large Qur’anic schools educate boys aged of 6-25 in Islamic faith and practice. Mufti Ismail, one of Malegaon’s Muslim leaders, is part of the influential council that governs Qur’anic schools throughout the country.

Most local Muslims belong to the “Ansari” people group. Many Ansaris are employed in the city’s textile factories – dark, hot warehouses where raw cotton and polyester is processed, spun into thread, dyed and woven into cloth. The only known Christian presence in the city consists of a very small struggling Christian community. May God encourage and transform these believers to truly live out their faith and be a light across the whole city.

* Muslims in Malegaon hold firmly to the traditions, the teachings and counsel of their leaders. Even when tactfully presented with the Gospel in 2008, many Muslims would not even consider the claims of Jesus Christ nor would they read the New Testament (Injil). Pray for the salvation of their community leaders like Mufti Ismail.
* The average Muslim on the street in Malegaon remains in ignorance concerning some of the basic questions of belief in God. May God give them enlightenment.
* Some are seeking for more understanding. One Ansari truck driver was asked what to do about his shame and guilt, knowing he has sinned against God. He paused, bowed his head and then looked up saying in a sincere tone, “I do not know.” In 2008 some Muslims did ask for tracts and Bibles. Pray that this openness could be directed toward personal contact with God.

I am involved in Christian radio broadcasting to many Muslim countries. Sometimes the audience has the possibility to SMS, phone or write to ask for literature. However, mail packages containing Bibles are often stopped by the religious security authorities in various countries

I met a listener who came under the protection of darkness after a four hour bike ride. He spoke enthusiastically about the radio broadcasts. He said that he wanted to study the Christian faith deeply (and honestly it seemed to me), so I gave him not only a Bible and study materials, but also the Jesus Film and other Gospel films. A few months later we met again. He asked for more books written by believers and videos. I was able to give him these things plus testimonies of Muslims who had encountered the Messiah. Unfortunately we had no time for a personal conversation. Is he a believer or still a seeker? I was unable to find out … this time.

* May the Holy Spirit guide during telephone conversations and meetings with interested radio listeners. Pray for divine rendezvous (Acts 8:26-31).

In the Quran Jesus Christ is clearly referred to as the Word of God and as a Word from God (in Arabic: Kalilmat Allah). While some Muslims know that Jesus is referred to as the Word of God in the Qur’an, the vast majority do not know what it means and even fewer realize that the same title is given to Jesus in the Bible. Some believers have used the “Word of God” texts in the Qur’an as a starting point for proclaiming the Good News of the Messiah to Muslims.

The Qur’an speaks of Jesus as the Messiah (see 3:45 and 4:169 on site as well as 4.157 and 4.171). Here again the vast majority of Muslims have no idea what it means for Jesus to be the Messiah, because, in the words of one author, “the meaning of the title is almost completely glossed over in Islam.” The word “Messiah” is the same as the word Christ in Greek. It refers to the one who is anointed as king.

* Pray that Muslims all over the world would be inclined to ask questions and try to understand Jesus’ titles: "the Word of God and the Messiah."
* Meditate on the following texts and use them in prayer: John 1:1-4,14 and Matthew 16:13-17.

Badakhshan and the Ismaili sect in the Pamir Mountains

Badakshan is the one part of the world where the Muslim Ismaili sect makes up the majority of the population. The Agha Khan, their spiritual leader, has become like a god to them. To quote a Badakshani: “The Agha Khan is like a living Koran for us. He shows us the way and how to live. Our religion is not stuck in history. We have a modern Imam to show us how to live in the 21st Century. We see the light of Mohammed on him.” Most other Muslims consider the Ismailis to be heretics.

There are few believers in Badakshan and no known believing communities. However, many Badakshanis are coming to faith elsewhere. There are believers in Dushanbe - the capital of Tajikistan - and in Moscow, where many Tajik Badakshanis become migrant labourers. Pray for believers living in other places, that they might wisely proclaim Jesus in their communities.

Prayer Starters:

* Meditate on Jeremiah 16:19-21 and use it in prayer.
* Pray for those who worship the Agha Khan as a god, and that they may come to a realisation that he is just a man.
* Spiritual blindness and the spirit of deception seem to be two major strongholds in Badakshan. Pray for these barriers to the Gospel to be removed.

Central Asia Update - Persecution on the rise

The vast area called Central Asia is home for more than 100 million people. In the 1990s hundreds of believers made their way to Central Asia in order to live there and proclaim the Gospel in the region. However, in recent years most governments in the region have started to persecute believers. The majority of foreign believers who sought to proclaim Christ have been expelled from one country after another.

In 2008 Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan voted laws which significantly restrain religious liberty. Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan had already become very oppressive for individuals and whole communities of believers. Proclaiming the Good News, changing religion, spiritual education for children, holding meetings and creating new communities have been made illegal or have been severely restricted. One believer who knows the region well says that “the young assemblies of believers which have developed in the last 20 years will suffer but they have deep roots. They will survive!” We still need to pray. Probably 90%+ of people in the region have never heard the Good News of the Kingdom.

* Lord, you have said, “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, As the waters cover the sea.” (Habakkuk 2:14)
Lord, may you be proclaimed to all in the region (Matthew 24:14).
* Lord, strengthen your people (2 Corinthians 12:9). Many are in prison or will be in prison for their faith in the coming years (Hebrews 13:3; Acts 16:23-25).

How Islam Split - Ali, Hassan and Hussein

Ali: Born in about AD 600 – died January AD 661
Ali was the cousin, adopted son and son-in-law of Mohammed. Disagreement over succession eventually split Islam into the Sunni and Shi’a branches. Ali encountered opposition and civil war during his reign. At about age 60 Ali suffered an assassination attempt while praying in the mosque of Kufa in Iraq - he died soon afterwards.

Hassan: Born in March AD 625 died March AD 670
Hassan (Hasan) was the grandson of Mohammed and the son of Ali and Mohammed’s daughter Fatima. Hassan’s succession to the Caliphate was contested. He retired to a quiet life in Medina till he died, poisoned by his wife, many years later. He is regarded by all Muslims as a martyr.

Hussein: Born January AD 626 at Medina in Saudi Arabia, died October AD 680 at Karbala in Iraq
Hussein, son of Ali, is revered as a martyr, having died in a struggle for the Caliphate. Hussein’s death was significant because it launched the Shi’a movement which is so prominent today in Iraq and Iran; they believe that Hussein should have been Caliph.

Prayer Starters:

* There are literally millions of Muslim men around the world who are named Ali, Hassan and Hussein. Pray for them to encounter the living Messiah (Acts 7:56 and 9:1-5).
* Millions of Iranians and Iraqis commemorate the memory of Hussein’s death each year. Sometimes as many as 7-8 million pilgrims visit Karbala during that time. Many Shi’a men will cut and flail themselves, shedding blood in the memory of Hussein. A popular Shi’a saying tells us, “a single tear shed for Hussein washes away a hundred sins.” Pray that Shi’as of Iraq and Iran could see the value of the blood of Jesus (1 Peter 1:18-19).

Muslims worldwide are often afraid of evil coming from the spirit world. This fear is a source of profound unspoken anxiety for many. Islam has a complex and multifaceted set of beliefs about the invisible forces at work around us. Theses beliefs also vary greatly from one region and one people to another. Muslims not only believe in the existence of angels but also in Jinn (Djinn), who also populate this world. Jinn, Muslims believe, are very similar to humans: they have their own social organisation and activities, yet they can also change their appearance and become visible or invisible at will. Most Muslim theologians believe that Shaitan (Satan, also called Iblis) belongs to the Jinn. These beings were supposedly created just before the creation of mankind. They do both good and evil. The term “Jinn” is related to the English word “genie” known through Arabian folk stories.

Born in Mecca in AD 605, died in Medina in AD 632. Fatimah (Fatima) was the name of the favourite daughter of Mohammed. Her name means “she who weans.” She was considered one of four perfect women by Mohammed. The others were Mohammed’s own first wife, Khadijah, the mother of Fatimah; Mary, the mother of Jesus; and Asiya the wife of an ancient Pharaoh.

Fatimah was apparently a good influence, but her name is also associated with an occult object that has fairly negative infleunce in the Muslim world. This so-called “Hand of Fatimah” is used by Muslims in amulets, charms and jewelry to ward off evil spiritual influences.

* Pray for the millions of Muslim women named Fatimah to find new life in Jesus.

* Algeria: population: 33.8 million: Algerian believers are under increased supervision and have experienced the beginnings of significant governmental persecution. They have been courageous and generally continue to affirm their faith. Trying to convert a Muslim either through education, health, social, culture or financial means can bring sentencing up to five years in jail with a maximum fine of $7,000. Pray along the lines of Acts 4:29-31.

* Tunisia: population 10.5 million: Tunisia has the appearance of being a Muslim country, however the number of committed Muslims is limited. The vast majority of Tunisians are pursuing their dreams of having a better lifestyle. Tunisians need to reflect more on the meaning and the brevity of life. Tunisian believers number less than 1,000. Pray using Mt. 6:24-34.

* Morocco: population 33.8 million: A very small number of Moroccan believers exist (possibly only a few thousand). Their numbers are slowly increasing, but knowledge of the Gospel in Morocco is very limited. Believers have suffered significant threats and mistreatment. Pray along the lines of Isaiah 40:9-11; 52:7. Pray for King Mohammed VI and the royal family. Hassan, the Crown Prince, is six years old.

Most Muslims believe that death by crucifixion was not a worthy death for a good prophet like Jesus. Based on the Qur’anic passages, the majority of Muslims in our day say that Jesus never went to the cross. It is commonly thought that He was taken up into heaven without dying and that someone else died on the cross in His place. There are several variations on this theory, but many Muslims say that Judas, the disciple, was actually crucified instead of Jesus. Supposedly he was made to look like Jesus and was crucified as a punishment from God because of his betrayal. Other Muslims believe that Jesus was crucified but He survived and died later or that He survived, then was elevated to heaven and did not die at all.

Prayer Starters:

* Believers in Jesus need to explain Christ’s death and resurrection simply and with much care. Muslims need to understand why the Messiah needed to die and how His resurrection brings us new life.
* Pray especially that Jesus would be increasingly revealed to Muslims as the victorious one who has overcome our sin and guilt, bondage to evil spirits and the horrors of death to bring us salvation. Pray for Muslims in your region, country and elsewhere according to Luke 24:19-26 and Acts 3:13-16.

Somalis in the USA

Dreams of Peace

Almost all Somalis in America are refugees from their own civil war. All face complex issues regarding their future and their commitment to Islam. They tend to settle in cities where they have been welcomed. Often they live in tight knit communities that emphasise adherence to Islam and are not generally open to other beliefs. However, they are still known for warm hospitality and deep friendship. Many first generation immigrant Somalis (age 35 and older) dream of returning to a restored, peaceful Somalia. Second and third generation immigrant Somalis (age 34 and younger) face a tremendous identity struggle.

Minnesota is home to between 30,000 and 70,000 Somalis. The vast majority work hard at learning English and adapting while trying to earn enough money to support themselves, as well as their families back in Somalia. Since December 2007, six Somali young men have been murdered by other Somalis as a result of tensions in the community.

Pray for the Iraqi Tribes

A large percentage of Iraqi Arabs trace their ancestry back to one of several tribal confederations. Each of these groups is divided into tribes, clans, houses and extended families. There are possibly 20-30 confederations with over 100,000 people and possibly over 1,000 tribal organisations in the country.

Tribalism is central to Iraqi cultural identity. “Iraqi culture builds to a very large extent on tribal traditions. From a cultural point of view, you cannot understand Iraq without understanding the importance of tribalism.”* Tribes are grouped into federations (qabila). the clan (fukhdh), the house (beit) and the extended family (khams). A khams consists of all male-born children who share the same great-great grandfather (five generations of men in a single family). The Bible tells us that people from every tribe and tongue will one day be before the throne of God (Rev. 5:9).

True lasting change and hope will only be found in the Messiah. The tribal leaders should take their notions of service, leadership and humility from Jesus. Use the list on the web-site in your prayers.
* A very high percentage of Iraqi believers have had to flee the country. Iraq has become a very dangerous country for believers.
* Show your children some of the genealogies in the Bible so they can see how important tribes are to God. (Genesis 10, Matthew 1 for example)

Friday night. Jasmine has just arrived from her workplace in the city. Gracious, sincere village neighbours greet Jasmine warmly at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. They take their places in a circle on the tikar, a floor mat of woven reeds. Someone reaches to the top shelf of a closet and takes down a stack of photocopied, large-font Scripture portions. Jasmine readies her reading glasses and settles herself in a cross-legged position on the tikar. Afterwards everyone in the circle prays for the others and for their nation. These prayers are different from ritual prayers in Arabic -- Jasmine says emphatically -- for they are offered in the name of THE MESSIAH, THEIR SAVIOUR...

This regular gathering is an example of communities of faith in Jesus the Messiah that are springing up throughout Indonesia. These gatherings may look different from what we see in our own cultural settings, but Jesus is being made known; He is being honoured!

* Around the world Muslims who have encountered the Messiah have to find culturally appropriate ways to worship. Some have adopted worship styles and attitudes from other cultures while adapting it to their needs. Others have developed unique cultural expressions of their faith. Pray for former Muslims to find ways to come together culturally yet still on a biblical bases.
* Pray for former Muslims in your city, region, and country, that the beauty of local cultural expressions may be manifest in worship (songs, preaching and teaching styles and new ways of living which bring worship into the heart of daily life).

Christian vs Islam: Divisions in Culture and Religion

While the religious differences between Christians and Muslims are significant, sometimes cultural differences can be even greater sources of misunderstanding and mistrust. Different perspectives can also be opportunities to learn from each other. Cultural differences may inhibit or enhance our ability to proclaim Christ, as well as a Muslim’s ability to receive our message.

In recent years many Muslims have cited the book “The Gospel of Barnabas” (available on the web) in order to show that Jesus was a good Muslim. Jesus is portrayed in the book as a prophet who prays, speaks and acts exactly like traditional Muslims.

An interesting distortion is that Satan is portrayed as the one to claim Jesus as God. The author of the “Gospel of Barnabas” has rewritten the Biblical Gospel to make it agree with the Qur’an. The aim of the book is to try to convince people that Jesus was a Muslim and predict the coming of Muhammad. It is a direct distortion of the Bible.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for those witnessing to Muslims to understand the cultural differences as well as the religious differences.
* The Gospel is cross-cultural - pray that this truth be believed and acted upon by Christian workers.
* May God give Muslims insights into the errors of the Gospel of Barnabas.
* Meditate on these texts in prayer: Matthew 5:43-48, Hebrews 1:5-8.

More than 830,000 Khorasani Turks live in the northern part of the Khorasan province (northwest of Mashhad). Khorasan is an important agricultural area and most Khorasani Turks are farmers. They are skillful craftsmen of jewellery, dolls, and glassware. Khorasan is Persian and means "Land of the Rising Sun."

The Khorasani Turks are 100 per cent Muslim, and their society is organized around traditional Muslim rules. At the present time, there are no known Khorasani Turk believers. Living in a very remote corner of the world, they are currently without Gospel resources in their own language, and there is no specific effort to implant believing congregations among them.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray that God will open doors for Christian businessmen and others to share Christ with the Khorasani Turks.
* Ask God to raise up qualified linguists to translate the Bible into the Khorasani language.

In AD 818 Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (Ali Reza) the seventh descendant of the Islamic prophet Mohammed was poisoned and buried in the small town which later became the city of Mashhad in Northeastern Iran. Ali Reza was known for his piety and he is now revered by Iranian Shi’a Muslims.

Mashhad has grown significantly during recent years. Large malls and super markets as well as department stores, parks and other attractions have popped up in the city. However, no one really knows how many people in Mashhad believe in Jesus as their saving king. All of them are under the threat of government persecution. One of Iran’s leading Protestant pastors from Mashhad was executed by hanging in December 1990 after a sharia court (an Islamic Court) condemned him.

Prayer Starters:

* Scriptures to meditate on and to proclaim in prayer: Acts 7:55-60, Luke 23:34, Luke 11:4.
* Pray for the millions of people in this city who do not know the living God. Even if they have heard much about the God of Abraham through Islamic traditions and the Qur’an, most of them still know very little of the true God by personal experience. They are far from receiving forgiveness and new life through the Messiah.
* Discuss with the kids how they would feel if they could not be openly Christian. Ask them to pray accordingly.

Mohammed is revered by all Muslims as the last and greatest prophet. In Islam, Mohammed is considered the “ideal man.” Mohammed is in no way considered divine, nor is he worshipped, but he is the model for all Muslims concerning how they should conduct themselves. No images of Mohammed are permitted (in order to prevent idolatry). His name actually means “The Praised One.”

During much of Mohammed’s lifetime pagan idol worship abounded in Arabia. An estimated 360 gods and goddesses were adored by the Arabs in Mecca, which was a major centre of idolatry in the region. Muslim historians think that even as a boy Mohammed detested idol worship and lived a morally pure life.

Prayer Starters:

* There are millions of Muslims named Mohammed around the world. The name Mohammed is spelled in different ways in various places and cultures: Mohammad, Mohamed, Muhammed, Muhammad, Mahommed, Mehmed, Mehmet, Mahomet, Magomed and even Maxamed. In prayer, cite these names before God.
* Pray that the Mohammeds of this world would come to know that there is another one who is honoured in heaven and earth and who has a name above all names. May millions of Mohammeds come to faith in the Messiah (See Acts 4:12, Philippians 2:10).
* Ask the boys in your family to pray today but hold hands together to show you are unified and agree in prayer.

The 22,000 Kaili Unde live on the west coast in the province of Central Sulawesi in Indonesia. Most Kaili Unde are dedicated Muslims. They are convinced that they will eventually be judged according to their way of life. However, heir religious life is mixed with ancient animistic beliefs too. Many of them regularly seek help from the local Dukun (shaman or magic priest) to be cured of illness or evil spirits. When a new house is built, the Kaili Unde always give gifts to both the good and evil spirits. The bigger the house, the bigger the gift. Only a few Kaili Unde have come to the Messiah. Unfortunately, there is no Bible or Christian material in their language.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for an openness and a willingness to obey the Gospel among the Kaili Unde (Romans 1:5 and 16:26).
* Pray they can hear and see the Indonesian Christian radio and TV and thus find the way to Christ.
* Pray the power of darkness and enslavement to spirits be broken and their eyes opened, so that the Kaili Unde can be freed (Acts 10:38 and 26:18).
* Pray with your children for missionaries to go to the Kali Unde

God really loves Arabs

Muslims are found in literally hundreds of different ethnic groups around the world. Possibly three quarters of the world’s Muslims are not from an Arabic background; however, Mohammed’s Arab lifestyle and cultural background have profoundly influenced Islam. We know that there are at least three types of Middle-Eastern Arabs: the Joktanites, the Ishmaelites and the Keturahites.

The Descendants of Joktan: The Arabs call him “Kahtan.” One of the very famous tribes descending from Joktan was Sheba whose descendants founded the kingdom of the Sabeans in Yemen.

The Descendants of Ishmael: They seem to have settled predominately in northern Arabia. One of Ishmael’s twelve sons named Nabajoth (Nebaioth) fathered the tribe which eventually became the head of the Nabatean kingdom (present day Jordan). Muslims believe that Mohammed was descended from Nabajoth.

The Descendants of Abraham through Keturah: All of Keturah’s sons eventually became the heads of Arab tribes. Pray along these tribal lines today and ask for revelation of the love God has for the Arab peoples.

Relatively little is known of the lives of Mohammed’s parents. The father of Mohammed, Abdullah, lived from AD 545-570. His full name was Abd Allah ibn Abd al Muttalib. Allah is the word for “God” in Arabic. Abd Allah means “servant or slave of God.” Abdullah died six months before Mohammed was born. It is not known when Amina, the mother of Mohammed, was born. Her name means “trustworthy or faithful.” It is said that Amina, took Mohammed to visit his maternal uncles of the an-Najjar tribe, in Medina. On her way back to Mecca, she died when Mohammed was just six years old, leaving him an orphan. Mohammed went to live with his grandfather and then with an uncle.

* Pray for the millions of living Abdullahs and Aminas around the world, that they would discover the the Messiah.
* Pray that the Abdullahs could discover real freedom as servants of God’s anointed King, Jesus.
* Pray for each woman named Amina, that she might discover that Jesus is the most trustworthy one.

For a former Muslim, becoming a believer in the Messiah is more than simply changing religion. In leaving Islam, the person has left his identity. The consequences of this choice are terrible: new believers are often rejected by other Muslims, and their family, and sometimes they are forced to divorce and they lose their children. They can lose their inheritance, their employment, their lodging, sometimes they receive death threats and some are actually killed. In many cases they are obliged to live their new faith in secret because of the fear of persecution. They become real “secret believers.” Many are isolated, and it is very difficult for them to persevere in their faith. The new believer needs a new identity.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for the secret believers who are even now facing the possibility of death. May God protect them.
* Pray for their families that they also may be attracted to the light of Christ. Pray that there would be a change of mentality so that Muslims can accept believers in the Messiah as honourable members of society.
* Pray that the situation of the secret believers would be better known and that believers all over the world could give them help.
* Explain to your children about the freedom you have and ask them to pray for a secret person.

The 1.3 million Guhayna are a largely nomadic people living in Central Sudan. Not much is known about this people group other than that they are Sudanese Arabs who trace their heritage to the Bedouin who wandered the deserts of Saudi Arabia centuries ago.

The Guhayna embrace rigid codes of honour, loyalty and hospitality, the strong role of men in society, the value of children, subservience of women and the five pillars of Islam. To confess Jesus as Lord is not well accepted and has serious consequences. Pray that fear of persecution from Islamic relatives will not hinder the Guhayna as they consider the Gospel. No one is actively reaching this people group.

Prayer Starters:

* Pray for missionaries and funds so the Guhayna can hear about Jesus.
* The Guhayna, like many Muslims, do not understand the term "Son of God." May God bring real breakthroughs in this area of Muslim misunderstanding. This subject is one of the most significant hindrances for Muslims coming to Christ. They need revelation.
* Scriptures to meditate on and proclaim in prayer: 2 Peter 1:16-18, 2 Samuel 7:12-14, John 1:49, 11:27, 20:31 and Romans 1:1-5, Psalm 2:7, Acts 13:33, Hebrews 1:5

Many Muslims do not practise their own religion regularly. They find themselves torn between Islam and Western values and culture. The relationships between Muslims and Westerners are sometimes tense. Each have attitudes of suspicion, rejection and feelings of injustice toward the other. This can lead to hatred. In addition, simple non-moral differences between cultures can be a major source of prejudice, problems and misunderstandings.

Unfortunately, believers are not always good examples of God’s character. In the words of one person who knows Muslims well, “Many Muslims have never met a believer who is actually living a real Christian life. This is certainly one of the greatest hindrances to effectively making the Messiah known among Muslims.”

Prayer Starters:

* Pray that Muslims will be able to meet sincere practising believers and discern how they are different from cultural Christians.
* With your children, share how a Christian should live in order to show a Muslim what it means to believe in Jesus.
* Scriptures to meditate on and proclaim in prayer: Leviticus 19:2, Mt 5:48, Rom 12:2

It is often said that Muslims are hard to reach with the Gospel. For religious, cultural and spiritual reasons this is often true. However it is not impossible. The Bible tells us that nothing is impossible for God (Mt. 19:26). Do I agree with God that nothing is too hard for Him?

Faith is important but do I also love Muslims? What is my most profound reaction when I meet them, when I see them on television? How would I react if a man in Muslim clothing came to my church? How would I react if a new believer from a Muslim background wanted to marry into my family? Would I be willing to give a thousand dollars so someone could proclaim the Gospel among Muslims? Would I be willing to sit and eat with a Muslim in a crowded restaurant? Have I been involved in criticizing them without knowing them? Am I fearful of Muslims? Is my main attitude toward them one of mistrust? Am I able to do as Jesus says, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself”? Is this my desire, is this my goal?

Be honest with God. Pray as He directs you. If it seems appropriate, pray for yourself and / or other believers around the world who may also be struggling with their attitudes, ideas and actions toward Muslims. Scriptures: Mt. 19:26, Jeremiah 32:27, Romans 12:1-2

The last of the unreached Muslims

There are about 220 Muslim peoples around the world with over 100,000 members each, and these peoples have no local committed Christian witness. In addition, there are no known believers who are specifically planning to take the Gospel of the Kingdom to them. There are huge numbers of Muslims peoples where there is a small Christian witness, but the Muslims still have never heard the Gospel in a meaningful and culturally adapted way. This is true of millions of Arabs in the Middle East as well as millions more in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Jesus said, “This Gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (Mt. 24:14). The end of the age and the dawning of God’s new world will not come about before all people from different religions and cultures have had an opportunity to hear and to respond to the message.

Why pray for Muslims?

Muslims and Christians believe that there is one God, but are we worshiping the same God in word and deed? One might also ask: In a time when many people think that all roads and all religions lead to the one true God, why should one pray for Muslims to come to salvation? Does it make any difference? Are they not already accepted by God?

Certainly Muslims are loved by God. Without doing anything they are loved by Him. God counts Muslim children and adults as precious. He loves every aspect of their languages, food, attitudes and daily life which are truly good and right. However, this does not mean that Muslims have entered into eternal life or have had their sins forgiven.

Muslims are not inspired by the hope of a new world in which Jesus, the crucified and risen Messiah, reigns as King. Most Muslims have actually been trained not to believe that Jesus died and rose again. Most Muslims around the world have not even had an opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus’ death for sins and His resurrection, which liberates us from the power of sin, death and demonic bondage.

Jesus has come so that we can have life and have it in abundance (John 10:10). Therefore let us pray for Muslims so they can enter into that life in the Messiah’s eternal kingdom.

Welcome to the 18th Anniversary of the 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World.

This year we have a special focus on the family of Mohammed. We hope you will gain insight into the life and family of this man who continues to greatly influence Muslims. In addition, we focus much of our prayer efforts on some of the most remote and largely unreached Muslim peoples. God has not forgotten them. God is awesome and He knows the hairs on the head of every individual.

The email edition is an extract of the main booklet and a link is provided each day to the main article. The idea is to give you a gist of the prayer material so you can be praying in unity with the rest of the world. The email is sent one day early to try to include most time zones.

Please use the Bible as much as possible in prayer. We have included various Bible references you can meditate on and proclaim. Ask God to inspire your prayers. That will build your faith and God can give you new insights for prayer based on His Word.

Testimony:

I prayed throughout Ramadan using your booklet for the first time last year, 5 times a day with my Muslim friend Hameed. My prayer was Hameed would give his life to Jesus before Ramadan 2009. On 26 July he gave his life to the Lord! I am speechless with gratitude over what the Lord has done. I will be praying for his family and other Muslim friends this year!

Praise God. Let us believe together. Surely there has never been a more significant if not urgent need to pray Muslims into the Kingdom of God as right now.

Dear praying friends,

I hope that you all are doing well.

I would really like your prayers.

A. We are having some significant difficulties with the 30-Days Children's materials;
At the moment the major difficulties are (1) Time (2) Technical problems.

It is becoming very critical to get the booklet done quickly for our Singapore coordinator, Grace. We need the materials in less than a week. She needs to complete a mailing by June 19th. The original was done in Quark Express and we usually work with Adobe Indesign. This has made several problems and there are other things. We may simply have to redo the layout.

B. Please continue to pray for the distribution of the Spanish materials. We need some breakthroughs. We have a really good contact in Argentina this year.

C. Ron, our webmaster, has informed me that his mother appears to be dying in Vancouver Canada. Please remember he and his family. He will probably be absent much of the time in coming weeks.

D. Our Chinese coordinator, Jane and here sister are in Mainland China. May God help them during their travels. Neither one are in really good health.

E. Our African English version is going to be printed soon. Some serious decisions need to be taken about the printing for Nigeria.

Dear Friends of 30 Days,

I really want to say thank you for your commitment to pray during our latest prayer effort in September.

Ron, our web master and mailing list supervisor has told me about all the interaction which he has had with several of you. Thanks for being involved.

Besides the e-mail and web prayer effort about 300,000 prayer booklets for adults and children were produced and distributed this past year in over 25 languages. We believe that this effort was a significant step toward bringing many many Muslims into the Kingdom of God. We encourage you to continue to pray throughout the year. The recent Mumbai attacks certainly show us that the need for prayer has not ceased! Millions of Muslims still have not heard the Gospel. Many of them are very frustrated. Many are asking questions about their own faith.

30 Days of Prayer 2009

I am writing this after a small meeting of "30 Days" coordinators in the Netherlands at the end of November.

We are presently preparing the texts and graphics which will be used online and in our printed prayer materials for 2009.

The dates for the 2009 prayer project are from August 22nd to September 20th.

We would really like your prayers as editorial decisions are being made at the present time.

We have to prepare the materials fairly early because of translation and production schedules.

Most of the prayer materials for adults should be available to the coordinators and translators around the world in mid January.

Materials for children will probably follow soon after that. Some significant changes are being introduced. May God continue to guide us.

We’re listening. And we’re admitting: You were right.

You told us this would happen.
You shot straight about loving stuff and worshipping money.
Greed will break your heart, You warned.
Money will love you and leave you.
Don’t put your hope in riches that are so uncertain.

You were right. Money is a fickle lover and we just got dumped.

We were wrong to spend what we didn’t have.
Wrong to neglect prayer and ignore the poor.
Wrong to think we ever earned a dime. We didn’t. You gave it. And now, tell us Father, are You taking it?

We’re listening. And we’re praying.
Could you make something good out of this mess?

For Tuesday 30 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

More than one million economically marginalised Muslims live in the city. Often jobless or underemployed and unable to return to their villages, many live on by sheer force of will. They survive in the ghettos and slums and even the progressive Muslim elite now feel the segregation and the economic disparities with the Hindus. This profound human suffering does not have easy solutions.

As believers in Jesus, we acknowledge that the greatest need of the Muslims is Christ. Yet an extremely small amount of evangelistic work in Gujarat focuses on the unreached Muslim peoples of Ahmedabad which include the: Shaikh, Bohra, Memon, Khoja, Pathan and the Sayyid. Most local followers of Jesus openly acknowledge they are afraid to reach out into the Muslim community. Imagine over one million people in Ahmedabad who have practically no Gospel witness. Pray for labourers to bring the Gospel of hope to the Muslims of Gujarat.

For Monday 29 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Suriname (formerly Dutch Guyana) is a small Republic on the northeast coast of South America, 80% of which is tropical rain forest. It is not unusual to see monkeys traversing the trees and boa constrictors crossing well travelled roads.

Suriname has an amazing mix of peoples, languages and religions. Religious affiliation is also quite varied: Hindu 27.4%, Protestant 25.2% (predominantly Moravian), Roman Catholic 22.8%, Muslim 19.6%, indigenous beliefs 5%. In the capital Paramaribo, a mosque, a Hindu temple, a church, a cathedral and a synagogue are all within walking distance of each other.

In other countries, Muslims are called to prayer from the top of the minaret (the tower) of a mosque. In Suriname, however, Muslims of Javanese origins follow their ancestral customs and respond to the sound of a drum.

There are several Christian denominations active in the country but the Gospel has been slow to take root among both Javanese and Hindustani Muslims. Pray that the Jesus film, and other media efforts can reach the Muslim population. The Jesus film has been extensively used in film showings and on television.
Roughly a third of the population left for the Netherlands after independence. One of the first mosques in Netherlands was built in 1981 by Muslims immigrants from Suriname. Pray for the Surinamese Muslims in Holland to be touched by the Gospel.

Many years ago the Comoros Islands were known for their exports of perfume essences, as well as vanilla and cloves. Today, however, the Comoros are largely forgotten. The islands are poor and underdeveloped with high unemployment. Most people are subsistence farmers.

The Comorans are proud of their Islamic heritage, dating from the early 1500s, and Islam is the state religion. Harassment and social discrimination against the followers of Jesus is widespread and evangelism is illegal. The Bible is available in French and Arabic, and portions of the scriptures in Comoran. However, due to the low literacy rate (near 60%), Gospel recordings are more useful. Some Comorans have recently entered the Kingdom.

Pray that the Gospel would be made available to all the families of the Comoros Islands (Genesis 12:1-3).
Pray that Christian music, Bible stories and other radio broadcasts will gain an audience and touch many lives for Jesus.
Pray against fear, witchcraft, curses, and interaction with jinn (evil spirits). The Comorans are bound by these practices. Only the stronger power of Jesus Christ can set them free (1 Peter 5:8, Matthew 10:28-30).

A new TV-channel for the children of the Arab World

For Saturday 27 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Arab children now have the opportunity to watch Christian programming at all times of the day. In December 2007, the SAT-7 network launched SAT-7 KIDS - a 24-hour Arabic satellite television channel for children. One hundred million children under the age of 15 live in the Arab world and at least half of them have access to satellite television.

On SAT-7 KIDS, children can see programs with messages of love, forgiveness and turning the other cheek. The channel is broadcasting cartoons, dramas, Bible stories, game shows and many kinds of programs about how to walk with the Lord. From the beginning, programs for children have been among the most popular of the wide variety of shows available on SAT-7.

Pray for the children of the Arab world, that they may be blessed through watching SAT-7 KIDS. Pray the strong message of hope gets through to these kids who often are in seemingly hopeless situations. Possibly five million people in northern Pakistan are Hindko speakers. Made up of several ethnic groups, mostly Pathans and Moghuls, the Hindko are more of a language group than a people group.

Hindko speakers make their living as farmers or merchants in the foothills of the Himalayas. Corn and wheat are the most important crops. These grains are ground into flour and used to make a flat bread that accompanies every meal. The people lead very simple lives, but often go to great lengths to secure an education and a better future for their children. Only about 25% of Hindko speakers can read in any language.

Changing times among the Rangi people

For Thursday 25 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Since the early 1900s in the city of Kondoa and the surrounding areas, more and more Rangi have turned to Islam. When the British took control of Tanzania in 1920, the Kondoa region was already 90% Muslim. Only the Rangi in the Haubi Valley refused Islam. After some debate among the local chieftains, in 1937 the Rangi in Haubi became Catholic and built an imposing cathedral. Since then the 90% Muslim, almost 10% Catholic ratio has basically not changed. Although there have been evangelical congregations for several decades in the area, there are few Rangi evangelicals.

A Rangi language Bible translation project began in 1996 and the translation is progressing well. Other work to help poor families is also under way.

Pray for the unity among the Christians that Jesus prayed for in John 17:20-26 to become reality in the area. Muslims have sometimes pointed out that the believers have often been divided.
Pray for courage, creativity and wisdom for the Rangi Christians as they proclaim the Messiah to their Muslim neighbours.
Pray for positive economical development, and that the Rangi will not forget God as they seek better economic conditions.

For Wednesday 24 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Libaan spent years outside of Somalia in several different countries. Eventually, he received a portion from the Injil (Gospel). He was impressed by what he read. The text was beautiful with a deep message. After two more years he fully believed the message and entrusted his life to Isa Al Masih (Jesus the Messiah). Libaan’s relatives heard that Libaan had become a Gal (Somali word for a pagan). Most Somalis can’t imagine that Christians may also be people who fear God, because they assume that Christians live a very worldly lifestyle (including drunkenness and immorality). Returning to see his family Libaan insisted that he not be called a Gal. In his view he was submitted to God, the Almighty. While his family received him well at first, later they rejected him. This experience broke his heart. Somali believers are few in number. They experience loneliness and rejection even from their most beloved family members. Only encouragement and comfort from God helps them to overcome.

Pray that Somalis could see the true value of the kingdom (Mt.13:44-46). God’s forgiveness and abundant life in the Messiah are present realities of that kingdom.
Pray that the Somalis who come to faith in the Messiah would not only be seen as rebels by their families. May they have opportunities to demonstrate that they can be culturally Somali and followers of Jesus at the same time.

Some men have found a way to escape from the harsh realities of Somali life. Khat (Catha Edulis) is an evergreen shrub that grows in the highlands of Ethiopia, Kenya and Yemen. Chewing the leaves of khat has a stimulating, narcotic effect, and like most drugs, khat is addictive and must be consumed daily. The majority of Somali men are addicted to khat, which has a huge influence on their life in Somali society.

Khat chewers suffer from various health problems, yet those who really suffer the most are their families. Men often spend most of their money on khat, yet their families go hungry.

Pray that the bondage of khat would be broken. Social pressure encouraging men to chew khat is huge. Strength, wisdom and courage are needed to break this national addiction.
Pray for wives and children to know how to cope with the absence of men.
Pray that Somali society will experience God's healing of families and come to know true fatherhood and the Father in Heaven.
Pray with the whole family for Somali families, giving God special thanks for Dads and Mums.

The central Indian city of Nagpur (whose name means ‘City of Snakes’) has a population of over three million people. Nagpur lies on major north-south and east-west transportation routes. The city is at the geographic centre of India.

It is a commonly held misconception in the region that followers of Jesus bribe downtrodden Muslims and Hindus to accept Christ in return for material benefit or social advantage. Therefore actions by local believers are often misunderstood. Those who do come to Christ are often pressured into returning to Islam by various social, economic, emotional and even physical pressures.

Pray for local believers to enter into their role as those who are part of God’s plan to bless all nations, tribes and tongues (Gen. 22:18 and Galatians 3:16,29).

Dearborn is the hometown of Henry Ford and the world headquarters of the Ford Motor Company. Many years ago Muslim immigrants to the United States (US) were drawn to the relatively high-paying jobs associated with the auto industry in the area.

Dearborn, Michigan now has the largest single concentration of Arab Muslims in North America. There are 32,000 Arab Muslims from Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq living in East Dearborn, making up almost 1/3 of the population. There have been a number of efforts to make Christ better known to Muslims in Dearborn. However, many believers say that in general, it can sometimes be even harder to discuss believing in Jesus with Muslims in Dearborn than elsewhere.

Pray that the Muslims in Dearborn will respond to the Gospel message they have heard (Acts 28:26-28).
Pray for the Arabic speaking Muslim background believers who live in the area. May they have God's grace in the Yemeni, Iraqi and Lebanese neighborhoods to start new communities of believers.
Pray for the new adult male believers in the Messiah to openly profess their faith in the context of their families, as well as in the larger Muslim communities. Their influence and authority in the home and society will pave the way for the Gospel to be heard and obeyed by others.

For Saturday 20 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Spread across both sides of the Bhagirathi (Hooghly) River, a main tributary of the Ganges, Murshidabad district was the seat of Muslim power in the Bengal region after 1704. This land was once famous for its Nawab dynasties (Muslim Moghol provencial governors). However, it has largely been forgotten in recent times.

Unfortunately the region is also now known for its numerous problems, including cases of human trafficking, child labour, severe poverty and local political assassinations. It has largely missed out on the foreign influence and development that have been present in other parts of West Bengal.

There is less than one full time minister for every million Muslims in this district.

Lina's fear of evil

For Friday, 19 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Lina is a young Minangkabau woman from a large family. They do everything that Islam requires of them, but they are also involved in other traditional practices. Instead of going to a doctor when someone is sick, they will often visit a dukun (a traditional healer). Lina especially believes that evil spirits are everywhere and she is very interested in all things supernatural.

This life of fear even affects Lina’s attitude toward her religion: she sees God as a faraway figure and she seems resigned to the idea that she will never be in paradise, because her good deeds never seem to be enough to outweigh her sins.

Even though Lina has had many conversations with some followers of Jesus about the forgiveness of sins through Isa Almasih (Jesus the Messiah), she is still too afraid to even consider the possibility that it is actually truth.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will open the hearts of the Minangkabau to the truth that only Jesus can bring salvation, and that He can free them from a life of fear.
Pray that Minangkabau people, including Lina and her family, will no longer look to the dukuns (healers) to solve their problems but rather they will look to Jesus for help and healing.

The second largest city in Syria, Aleppo, is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, along with the capital, Damascus. With populations of around 4 million and 6 million respectively, about half the country’s population live in these two cities.

The people of Aleppo are predominantly Sunni Muslim and have a reputation for being conservative and devout. This is both a challenge and an opportunity... Some Muslims, especially the young and educated, are growing dissatisfied with Islam but are drawn towards materialism, secularism and even atheism as the only alternatives they know. Very few Muslims in the city have ever heard a clear presentation of the Good News.

The Mazandarani People

For Wednesday, 17 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

The Mazandarani speakers of Iran number between 3 and 4.5 million people who live mainly in the Mazandaran province and neighbouring provinces bordering the Caspian Sea, in northern Iran. The more educated Mazandarani can read Farsi well. This people is almost 100% Shi’a Muslim, and Islam has been present in this province for about 1,300 years. In Iran it is a capital offence to convert from Islam to another religion.

There are a number of small cell churches and scattered believers throughout the region. In addition there are individual Most Mazandarani believers readily recognize the benefits of audio materials in their language and are eager to promote Scripture translation activity. Radio and satellite broadcasts are being planned. Training and discipleship of believers is being done discretely with small numbers of people in Iran.

The Massalit People,

Daring to question Islam in Darfur

For Tuesday, 16 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

The Massalit are a group of some 400,000 people in Sudan (most in Darfur) and in Eastern Chad. Even though their life is hard, they have generally been a happy people.

Unfortunately, many things have changed for the Massalit people in the last three years. They have become one of the ethnic groups involved in the Darfur crisis where 200,000 people have been killed since 2003.

Through the suffering brought on by those of their own Islamic religious background, many people in Darfur have dared to question their own faith and have even ceased to pray. Christian Evangelism in frowned upon, however, spiritual encouragement and testimonies are usually welcome. There are several followers of Christ helping in the region. Schools have been set up and many adults have become interested in learning to read.

Please pray for an end to the horror of Darfur.
Pray that the positive aspects of Massalit culture would not be changed due to the crisis, and that they will be able to truly differentiate between good and evil influences in their lives.
Pray that God will open the hearts of the hurting Massalit to receive His Word and healing, creating vibrant new communities of faith from which Massalit believers can preach in their own language to those around them.

Living in Nigeria, Niger and Chad

For Monday, 15 September, Ramadan 2008. "Loving Muslims Through Prayer"

Kanuri main tribes consist of the Yerwa Kanuri, the Manga Kanuri, and Kanembu Kanuri. The Kanuri are tall and very dark in appearance, with a stately, dignified look. Many Kanuri speak Hausa and Arabic.

The Kanuri have been Muslims since the eleventh century (about 1,000 years). Many superstitions and animistic beliefs are still practiced in conjunction with Islam. Charms and amulets are worn around the neck or in pockets for various reasons.

Some of the Kanuri tribes do not yet have a translation of the Bible in their native dialect; others tribes have only portions of the Bible. Among the nearly five million Kanuri, there are several hundred known believers.

Ask God to call more people to proclaim the love of Jesus among the Kanuri.
Ask the Lord to raise up strong local churches among the Kanuri and increasingly use the small number of Kanuri believers to share the Gospel with others.

City Population: 10 million

Muslims have lived in Bangkok for generations, often forming homogenous communities, largely closed to non-Muslims. The size of each community differs, but on average it is about 150 - 200 households. These communities have been able to develop their own mosques and religious schools, and maintain their social and dietary customs.

Muslims tend not to move into areas where the residents are primarily Buddhist. However, because Bangkok has become such a huge city, there are many places where Muslims mix with non-Muslims - even though they prefer to both live and work together with fellow Muslims. While large areas in the eastern part of Bangkok used to be primarily Muslim, they are now a minority in these districts.

The Aimaq people

700,000+ Aimaq in Afghanistan (estimate)
Possibly 200,000 Aimaq in Iran (estimate)

The name "Aimaq" (the Mongolian word for tribe) refers to the tribal peoples living in the largely barren and mountainous region of western Afghanistan and northeastern Iran. The Aimaq are actually a group of up to 20 smaller tribes which have historically linked themselves together through alliances and marriage.

Aimaq women have exceptional freedoms when compared with others in rural Afghanistan. Women sit with men while talking, even if strangers are present. Often girls are not married until about age 18 and are free to reject a groom proposed by their father.

The Aimaq are largely illiterate Sunni Muslims. There are few if any known followers of Jesus among the Aimaq. Various Christian radio broadcasts have been done in Dari and Farsi, however, the extent to which these broadcasts are even received by the Aimaq in Afghanistan is not known.

The city of Kairouan has existed for about 1,300 years. Founded as part of the expansion of the Islamic Empire, it boasts the oldest mosque in North Africa, with the oldest standing minaret in the world - a tribute to the city's original purpose: to be a base for the spread of Islam across the region.

For many North Africans, Kairouan is considered the fourth holiest city of Islam. Its school trains religious leaders (Imams) for all of Tunisia. The city is known for the quiet conservatism, women stay in their homes more than in other parts of the country. Kairouan lacks the bustle of many Tunisian cities, with little industry to boost the economy. Young people long to leave for the West in search of employment.

To his followers Prince Karim Aga Khan IV is more then just their leader; he traces his ancestry back to the Prophet Muhammad through the line of Ali and Fatima, the Prophet's daughter. The Aga Khan's 18 million followers reside in more than 25 countries, stretching from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe all the way to North America.

As Imam and spiritual leader of the Shiite Ismailis, he has absolute authority over his followers. The feeling of family within the Ismaili community is so strong that the Aga Khan's picture is not only put up in every shop and office but a photo of him and his close family are in every Ismaili family photograph album. Ismailis pray three times instead of five times a day and don't use the general practice of Muslim worship postures; one even finds Indian and Hindu elements in their worship.

Ethnic Han Chinese: 96%
Major Muslim group: Hui people (approx. 2% or about 280,000)
There are about 12 million Hui in all of China.

The Hui people trace their ancestors back to Muslim traders, soldiers, and officials who came to China during the seventh through fourteenth centuries. These men settled and married local native (Han) Chinese women. The Hui have so well assimilated into the Chinese society that they are almost indistinguishable from the Han Chinese, except in dietary and religious practices.

There is very little if any Christian witness to the Hui Muslims in general. There are no known believers among the Muslim Hui in Beijing. Beijing is the capital of the People’s Republic of China, The city was founded more than 3,000 years ago, and was regarded as the capital of China for over 850 years.

Bringing God’s Love to Muslims

in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, often called the “Pearl of Orient” is composed of Hong Kong Island and some associated areas on the coast of China. Hong Kong's Muslim population includes 90,000 native Hong Kong residents (Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, Malaysian, etc) and about 110,000 Indonesian migrant labourers.

In the last ten years, significant numbers of Indonesian migrant labourers have come to Hong Kong, often as domestic helpers, and 80-90% of them are women. On their days off, they often gather near Victoria Park. Local Chinese believers have often befriended the Indonesians and several new congregations of believers have begun. However, the churches need more manpower and resources to effectively bring the Good News of God's love to the Indonesians.

Pray that Chinese believers in Hong Kong will make even more friends for Christ among Muslims. Pray that more Chinese believers will be willing to learn Indonesian languages in order to proclaim Christ.
Pray that many Christians who have hired Muslims to work in their homes will treat them fairly and proclaim Christ through their daily life. It would be good for Christians to understand the rights of foreign laborers, and help them fulfill their contracts well.
May God open Muslims hearts in Hong Kong to the Gospel, so they are willing to listen to the Word and be obedient to the Lord.
